Houston police arrested Erica Jisela Miranda-Alvarez, 28, who allegedly stabbed her friend to death with a purpose of passing her friend's child off as her own. She is charged with capital murder of Carolina Miranda Flores, who was found brutally murdered in her own home.
Police report that Miranda-Alvarez had a miscarriage and lost her baby in January. She hid the news of the miscarriage from her family and boyfriend and continued to pretend that she was still pregnant. Alvares and Flores had been friends for five years. Police says the suspect, Miranda-Alvarez, came to the United States a few years ago and befriended Flores’ brother. On December 19, she visited the victim and killed her. Then she kidnapped Flores’s 6-week-old baby and disappeared. Shamali Flores was reported missing.
Marcos Mariano Thomas Palacios, the baby’s father who was the primary suspect at the time, did his best to help the police find his daughter. The father's charges were cleared.
The police force, together with SWAT and FBI officers, found Miranda-Alvarez and Flores’ newborn daughter, Shamili Flores at an apartment complex in Houston on Tuesday morning. The couple planned to leave with the baby. They were taken into custody without any other incidents. Shamali was transported to the local hospital at once for medical examination. Currently, the baby is safe and healthy, under the supervision of Child Protective Services. The accused woman was with her boyfriend at the time of the arrest. Police report that he is also under investigation, although he is not facing any criminal charges yet.
Dr. Richard Pesikoff, a psychiatrist at Baylor School of Medicine, agrees that the loss of a baby can lead to an unstable mind. In their delusion, they think that it is their child and they have the right to steal the baby from her real parents.
