Tonie Wells, 22, was murdered at the bottom of the basement staircase inside Crown Heights apartment complex where she lived. Her dead body was found by the police around 10 am on Wednesday. Officers reported bruises on the dead woman’s neck.
After the policed received a 911 call, they rushed to the apartment complex. Daily News reports that a crying toddler directed police officers to the body of her mother. The main suspect was the toddler’s father, named Barry Wells, who stabbed her down the stairs before fleeing home. The toddler was left at home with the murdered mother. Police is yet uncertain how long Tonie Wells' body was left in the house with the 2-year-old girl, whose cries made their neighbors call the police.
The dead woman’s sister told the magazine that it could not be an accident and accused her sister’s husband. According to her cousin, Tonie Wells was recently pregnant, but she had a miscarriage after an argument with her husband. A police officer said Wells was eight months pregnant when she lost the baby.
Berry Wells had posted photos and a statement urging other men treat their wives respectfully especially if there is a child in the family. He said kids will grow up and remember how parents treat each other. After Tonie Wells body was found, a friend replied to Berry’s post on Wednesday that he would go to hell.
Investigators are actively searching for Barry Wells, the 29-year-old husband. He is to be questioned regarding the murder. Deputy Chief Michael Kemper, Commanding Officer of Detective Borough Brooklyn North told reporters that this case is currently considered a possible homicide. Neighbors witnessed an argument and they heard something falling down the stairs. The Medical examination will reveal more details about the murder.
