The love story of Matthew and Melissa started when they were still in school. They got married at a young age and they had four daughters, now ages from eight years to 18 months. After approximately 9 years of sharing a household, problems occurred in their relationship. According to Melissa, Matthew became more possessive and jealous, and sometimes she was scared of him. In October 2013, the couple broke up and Matthew filed for divorce.
Melissa worked at a local restaurant and she did not earn enough to support 4 children and herself. Matthew came from a well-off family so Melissa allowed Matthew to have temporary custody of their children until she could stand on her feet.
After some time, Melissa met her new love, Jason Sanford. She had known Jason since school. The happy couple spent the Christmas Day of 2013 together with friends and family and everyone could tell how happy the couple was. Soon Melissa learned that she was pregnant and planned to reunite all the siblings. On Boxing Day, she had an appointment with Matthew and her youngest daughter at a fast food restaurant. Since then, no one ever heard back from Melissa.
After waiting for eight hours, Jason filed a police report about a missing person. A few hours later a woman called 911. She claimed to be the neighbor of Matthew Sowders and that she had seen a woman’s unmoving feet in his apartment. Police officers rushed to Matthew’s apartment and broke down the door but there was nobody there.
The investigation continued and soon Melissa’s abandoned car was found at a truck stop, eight miles from Matthew’s apartment. After that, Matthews SowdMatthews was taken to the police station for questioning. He told the officers that after meeting Melissa, they both departed to different directions.ers’ girlfriend called the police. She told the police that after Melissa went missing, Matthew came home dirty and wet and his truck was muddy. Matthew had confided in her that he had snapped and choked Melissa to death and threw her body in a trash can in Cypress Creek. On January 2, The rescue team found Melissa’s weighed-down body in the water at Cypress Creek. Melissa was identified with a one-word tattoo on her hip: Matt.
Prosecutors believe that Matthew found out about her pregnancy by searching in Melissa’s phone and he couldn’t control himself when he realized that the baby wasn’t his. However, there is no evidence revealed to prove this. Matthew was sentenced to 60 years in prison with the chance of parole after 30 years.
