The parents of a 4-month-old boy, Cheyanne Harris and Zachary Koehn, were charged with murder after the baby’s body, covered with maggots, was discovered in the swing of their Iowa apartment. According to court records, the baby hadn’t been removed from his place, hadn’t had a bath, or a diaper changed for at least a week.
Cheyanne Harris, 20-year-old, and Zachary Koehn, 28-year-old, are the biological parents of Sterling Koehn. They were arrested on Wednesday and now face charges of child-endangerment and first-degree murder in the death of their son. Even though the Iowa couple asserted that they had fed their baby the same day he was found dead, Sterling Koehn weighted less than seven pounds. In fact, medical examinations indicate completely different timeline for the infant death due to some shocking facts - there had been a maggot infestation on his skin, the clothes hadn’t been changed, etc. The exact date of the baby’s death is yet to be determined by the authorities.
As one of the representatives from the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s office stated, “The facts of this case go far beyond neglect and show circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to human life.”
Another surprising circumstance is how the authorities discovered the baby. If there wasn’t the Mitchell County Attorney’s Office knocking at the court’s doors to find Zachary Koehn because he failed to pay on the agreement, no one knows what would come out of this. As it turned out, Mr. Koehn had a charge of second-degree theft which was dropped after his consent to pay for the damage.
Investigation on this case continues, more evidence might be uncovered, and more information to be learned.
