Woman sends explosives to Obama, gets caught because of cat hair

Julia Poff, a 46-year-old woman from Texas, has been sending packages containing explosives to former president Barack Obama and has recently been caught thanks to cat hair.

In October 2016, Poff sent home-made bombs not only to Obama, but also Texas Governor Greg Abbot and the Social Security Administration.

The DIY bombs included a cigarette pack, a shipping address that was not fully removed, and a salad dressing cap. The cigarette pack had a Texas tobacco stamp, which led the investigators to the shop the cigarettes were sold at. Poff’s credit card history showed cigarette purchases from the given shop. Apart from that, the bomb packages contained incendiary powders that were also found in the woman’s house.

Most notably, the package sent to Barack Obama contained cat hair, stuck under the address label. Lab results proved that the hair belonged to one of the cats that live at Poff's house.

Out of 3 explosive packages, only Abbot opened his, however, the bomb did not detonate, since the package was not opened the way it was planned.

The motive behind the attempted crime was dissatisfaction with Texas authorities. The woman was angry at the Texas Governor because she had not received support from her ex-husband during Abbot’s service as governor. She was denied social security benefits.

As for the package sent to the former president, Poff simply didn’t like Obama, according to the FBI agents.

Poff, who has a criminal history of theft and state felony fraud, has been charged with 6 counts, including sending injurious articles and transporting explosives with the intent to kill and injure. She is currently held at the Houston federal detention center.

The case will go to a pretrial conference in early 2018.
