The 36-year-old rapper Juelz Santana fled from the police on Friday after he was asked to open his luggage at the security checkpoint of Newark Liberty Airport. The X-ray at the security gate detected a metal alert, after which a loaded gun was discovered in his carry-on bag.
Juelz Santana, whose real name is LaRon James, nervously approached the security point and requested several airport employees to screen his bags expeditiously because he was going to miss his flight. His flight to San Francisco was scheduled to depart from Newark on Friday night. When TSA discovered his gun, he fled the airport in a cab, leaving his belongings behind, including his Derringer 38-caliber handgun, driver’s license, and two bags.
Around 1 a.m. on Monday, Santana surrendered himself to Port Authority police. According to Joe Pentangelo, the department spokesman, he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and an attempt to carry it on an aircraft, as well as possession of drugs. NJ.com reports that Santana was not allowed to carry a gun because of an arrest in 2011 on drug and weapons charges. A raid on the rapper’s New Jersey studio was made, two loaded handguns and 17 bags of marijuana were confiscated. The possession of a firearm by a convicted felon carries around a 10-year sentence.
Santana was scheduled to perform at The Grand Nightclub in San Francisco on Saturday, but the show was canceled. He is well known for his song “There It Go”.
